Diocese Plans Monument

The Davenport Iowa diocese announced plans recently to create a millstone monument to victims of clergy sex abuse. The diocese agreed to create a monument as a non-monetary term of a $9 million settlement with 37 victims in the wake of numerous lawsuits containing allegations of decades-old sexual abuse by priests.

In a written statement, Bishop William Franklin said the marker, to be placed outside diocesan headquarters, will remind church officials of their commitment to protect children as well as symbolize their commitment to the healing of victims.

An old grinding stone stored at the diocese's St. Vincent Center in Davenport will be incorporated into the monument. Matthew 18:5 says anyone who harms a child should have a millstone tried around his neck and then be tossed into the sea!
